If you are a webmaster, you NEED to know more about the
following:
Anyone who has owned a website for any length of time knows that just
submitting your site to search engines and sitting back and waiting for
thousands of hits per day just doesn't work!
Without a doubt the key to approximately 70% of your traffic is
search engines. It is important to concentrate on the ten major engines,
as each one can yield more traffic for your site than all of the smaller
engines and databases put together.
Whilst the ten major search engines are THE most important ways of
gaining large amounts of traffic, we must not ignore the smaller
engines, directories, and free for all link pages. Some of these engines
will provide you with a healthy, steady stream of traffic. So even if
you fell off ALL of the ten engines on the same day, you're traffic
won't disappear entirely. If you have submitted your site to 1,200 or so
of these smaller sites, I guarantee you will see more traffic! We

of these smaller engines automatically - just set it off and leave it
alone! You can download
a free version, or we can submit to all these
engine for you. Webrings are an effective way of providing a constant stream of
traffic. I would advise you to join as many webrings as you can, but try
not to make your pages look ugly with webring fragments all over the
place! You can expect to attract about and extra 50 visitors per day if
you join a few rings. You can start by joining my
webring This is a little known, and very new method of gaining traffic, and
we have yet to see it reach its full potential. Some webmasters claim to
have had thousands of hits per day a few months after joining. I joined,
but haven't seen significant traffic yet. My advice is to try this
method out and get in before we reach saturation point. Don't cheat
though. If you do, it just won't work! for a full explanation please
copy this page and make the necessary
adjustments. Reciprocal links are a sturdy method of gaining extra traffic, and
can benefit you in more ways than you expect. Besides the obvious
(people clicking through to your site), many of the major search engines
check to see how many links there are to your site. Their reasoning is
that the more people that are linking to you, the more important your
site is, and will give you a better ranking! Write to as many webmasters
as you can, every day, and ask them to link to you. If you don't have a
links page on your site, add one as soon as you can. You can add
your link to our page, and all we ask is that you add a link to us
in return. I have tried three or so banner programs and in my opinion these are
a waste of time, and I'll tell you why. Generally speaking many of these submission services don't do much to
help you. Many of them guarantee inclusion in Yahoo! but I have yet to
see one live up to its promise.
In short, referral programs work! They work best if you
already have a reasonable level of traffic, and if you can seemlessly
integrate it into your site. The reason for this is that, as I said
before, only 1% of visitors will click a "banner" or
"link" to an outside website, but a button that matches your
existing website and appears to be an internal link will reap many times
more clickthroughs! An important part of online commerce is accepting credit
cards. Not too long ago, this was restricted to those who could open a
merchant account and had lots of money to spend on "application
fees" etc etc.
I use Webposition Gold to monitor my positions. It
checks ALL of my pages, every day, against the ten major search engines,
with any keywords I choose! Just think, if you have 20 keywords, and you
have to check them manually against 10 engines, that means you have to
perform 200 searches per day manually! You can even download
a free version here. I save about 30 hours per week using
Webposition Gold. Whilst the ten major search engines are THE most important ways of
